Hazardous Materials
Hazardous materials—also known as dangerous goods—are any substances or materials capable of posing an unreasonable risk to health, safety, and property when transported in commerce. Hazardous materials may include such items as:
- Laboratory chemicals
- Radioactive materials
- Compressed gases
- Biological agents
- Diagnostic specimens
- Animal or human tissues, blood, serum, etc.
- Equipment or instruments that contain hazardous materials
- Lithium batteries
- Dry ice
Important: If there is any uncertainty regarding whether a substance is regulated or how it should be handled for shipping purposes, all personnel must contact the EHS for assistance.
International Shipping
All international shipments must be approved by the Office of Export Control for review and approval prior to submission of a request for shipment through EHS. Please allow 5-7 business days for EHS to process your request.
Complete the Export Compliance Review Request for submission to Penn State Export Control.
Any questions regarding the applicability of U.S. Export Control requirements should be directed to the University Export Compliance Officer.
Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to University Park campus Transport and Courier Rules
A private courier service transports research and biological materials between Hershey Medical Center (HMC) and University Park (UP). Attach the Courier Transport Form to the package. Packages without labels will not be accepted by the courier.
Packaging and Labeling
- Package and label all samples according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) packaging requirements. Contact EHS for additional information.
- Complete all fields on the shipping label; incomplete labels will be rejected.
- Packing materials are available from Saf-T-Pak.
Pick-up and Delivery
Package drop-offs and shipments are available on Tuesdays and Fridays only. Items must be at the designated location prior to the scheduled pick-up time.
- Hershey Medical Center: QA Lab, Room HG154, Ground Floor
- University Park Campus: Millennium Science Complex loading dock[RL1]
Delivery/Pickup times Tues & Fri:
- Starting at HMC QA Lab: 8am
- To Benner Pike Lab (BPL): 10am
- To PSU Millennium Science Complex Dock: 11am
- Ending at HMC QA Lab: 4pm
Before sending any shipment, please confirm that the appropriate personnel at the destination are ready and available to receive the delivery.
Training Requirements
University Park personnel transporting materials to, or picking up materials from the Millennium Science Complex must complete training on regulated biological materials via the CITI Program:
- Go to the CITI Program website.
- Log in and Add a Course.
- Select Shipping of Regulated Biological Material.
- Access the three training modules from your home page.
Note: If you have not previously used CITI, you will be required to set up a profile with them.
