The goal of the University's Fire Prevention and Protection Program is to provide a fire safe environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors to Penn State. This is accomplished through fire prevention education, inspections, pre-operational reviews, fire hazard analysis, and fire extinguisher and fire evacuation training. Emphasis in education and implementation of programs for in-residence students and other areas is a major component.

Everyday activities can create unexpected fire risks if basic precautions aren’t followed. These resources highlight common fire hazards on campus and provide guidance to help protect people, facilities, and operations. Simple awareness and safe practices go a long way in preventing fires.

Appliance Safety for Office Kitchens & Breakrooms

Office kitchens and breakrooms are common sources of fire risk due to cooking appliances, electrical equipment, and unattended use. Practicing appliance safety—such as using approved equipment, keeping appliances clean, and never leaving food unattended—helps reduce the risk of fires in shared spaces.

Portable Heaters

Portable heaters can pose a serious fire hazard if used improperly. Fires often occur when heaters are placed too close to combustible materials, plugged into extension cords, or left unattended. Understanding safe use expectations helps prevent injuries, property damage, and disruptions during colder months.

Holiday Trees

Natural and artificial holiday trees can increase fire risk if they dry out, are placed near heat sources, or are decorated with damaged lighting. Keeping trees watered, using tested lighting, and maintaining clear exit paths helps ensure seasonal decorations remain festive—and fire safe.
