Radionuclide Safety Education (Initial)
This Course is comprised of two parts:
PART I: ON-LINE (must be completed prior to attending the In-Person session)
- Read the on-line course material
- Take the on-line Quiz (3 attempts, need a 70 or greater to pass)
FOR THOSE WITH A VALID PENN STATE ACCESS ACCOUNT ([email protected]) AND CANVAS ACCOUNT
Go to: http://canvas.psu.edu/
Click on “Canvas Login” on the upper right of the screen.
Click on “Penn State WebAccess”
Login into Canvas using your Penn State Dual Authentication
From your dashboard under Request Course Space click on “Pride Manager”
In the Pride Name space type “Radionuclide” the click “Search”.
To enroll in the Radionuclide Safety Education (initial) Pride click on “Enroll”
A box will come up that says self-enroll type “508e97bc1c” where it asked for a pass code then click “Enroll”
Once you are enrolled you can access the Pride “Radionuclide Safety Education (initial)” from your dashboard.
Read the course material. The course presentation is under “Files” and is titled “Radionuclide Safety Education (Initial) Presentation.doc”
Take the course quiz. The course quiz is under “Quizzes” and is titled “Quiz – Initial Radionuclide Safety Education”
FOR THOSE WITH A LIMITED ACCESS ACCOUNT OR IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CANVAS ACCOUNT
Email Greg Herman at [email protected] and specify if you have a limited access account or if you have a valid Penn State ID but do not have a CANVAS account. You will be manually added to the course and then notified that you have been added to the course. Once you have been notified that you have been added to the course you can follow the instructions above for accessing the on-line material/quiz.
PART II: IN PERSON HANDS-ON
- Sign Up and attend an in-person hands-on session
Instructions for signing up for a hands-on session:
Click the Courses Tab
Under “Courses by Category” click on “Radiation Safety”
Then Click “Radionuclide Safety Education (Initial) - HANDS ON SESSION”
Then Enroll in a session that is offered. If you cannot attend any of the available sessions contact Greg Herman at [email protected] to set up a suitable date/time to attend.
After you have attended the hands-on session you will receive a certificate that will be emailed to you for the class.
- Please come 10 minutes early to complete training record documentation
- The door to the class room is closed at the start of class. If you arrive after the class start time do not interrupt the class. Please leave and you will need to sign up for a different session.
After completing this initial course, you will receive additional instruction from your PI or laboratory supervisor on lab specific information and experimental procedures needed to use radioactive material in your experiments.
Those who work with more than the normal amount of radioactive material, for example more than 5 mCi of phosphorus-32, or more than 1 mCi of iodine-125, or with high energy gamma emitters, will receive additional instruction from the Radiation Protection Office.
Please note that this course does NOT fulfill the requirements for use of x-ray machines or other radiation producing equipment. This course will NOT grant you an AUTHORIZATION to use radioactive materials as a PI or SUPERVISOR, although it is a requirement for an authorization.
A certificate of completion will be sent to you by email shortly after you have completed all requirements.
